The Heys Primary kicks off centenary celebrations with Community Summer Fair

The Heys Primary School officially launched its centenary celebrations in style with a hugely successful Summer Fair that brought together pupils, families, staff and members of the wider community to celebrate 100 years of the school.

The event was honoured by the attendance of the Mayor and Consort, who joined visitors in enjoying an afternoon filled with traditional family fun. Organised and run entirely by the school staff, the fair showcased the strong community spirit that has been at the heart of The Heys since it first opened its doors in 1926.

The fair featured a wide range of attractions including bouncy castles, face painting, candy floss, an old-fashioned sweet stall, “Soak the Teacher” and the ever-popular “Name the Teddy” competition.

Visitors also enjoyed a nostalgic café serving traditional school favourites such as cornflake cakes and school cake, offering a trip down memory lane for many former pupils and parents. The event also welcomed WISH Charity, who were on hand to support families of children with additional needs and promote the valuable services they provide within the local community.  

The Summer Fair marked just the beginning of a programme of exciting centenary events planned over the coming months. As part of the celebrations, pupils are preparing for a special Living Museum Day, where they will dress in fashions representing different decades from the past century and bring history to life for visitors.

Children are also creating a commemorative newspaper highlighting memorable events from the last 100 years and will be displaying artefacts and memorabilia from across the decades for parents and carers to enjoy.

These activities aim not only to celebrate the school's rich history but also to help current pupils understand their place in the ongoing story of The Heys as it looks ahead to its next century.
