Firefighters returned to Tintwistle Moor after worsening conditions overnight led Derbyshire Fire & Rescue Service to declare a major incident.

Firefighters returned to Tintwistle Moor after worsening conditions overnight led Derbyshire Fire & Rescue Service to declare a major incident.

The wildfires, which have affected land near Arnfield Farm and Tintwistle Moor, have required a huge multi agency response involving specialist wildfire teams, neighbouring fire and rescue services, the Peak District Fire Operations Group, United Utilities, local Mountain Rescue Teams and Derbyshire Constabulary.

Fire crews had scaled back operations overnight on Sunday, however, firefighters were called back to the moor at around 1.15am on Monday after high winds caused the fire to intensify.

Five fire engines, two Unimogs, an Argocat, a command unit and a water carrier are tackling the blaze alongside partner agencies.

Derbyshire Fire & Rescue Service has urged people to stay away from the area while firefighting continues. Nearby roads and footpaths remain closed, with helicopter water drops taking place when conditions allow.

Officials have warned that anyone entering the area could place themselves and emergency crews at risk, with helicopter operations unable to continue safely if members of the public are nearby.

Area Manager Ellie Gillatt said the incident remains "significant and complex", with firefighters working in difficult conditions.

She also urged the public to help prevent further wildfires during the current spell of hot, dry weather by avoiding campfires and barbecues, disposing of cigarettes safely, taking litter home and reporting any signs of fire by calling 999.

Residents affected by smoke are advised to keep windows and doors closed where possible.

Derbyshire Fire & Rescue Service says the incident is expected to continue for some time and further updates will be issued as the situation develops.
