Town centre evacuation

The Police cordon in Glossop town centre.

Residents were forced to leave their homes for almost four hours after a suspected Second World War ordnance was discovered in a garden in Glossop town centre on Sunday evening.

Emergency services were called to Chapel Street at around 6.30pm on Sunday 5th July, after the item was uncovered while a resident was gardening.

Derbyshire Police established a cordon around the area and evacuated a number of nearby properties while Army bomb disposal experts were called to examine the device. Local businesses, including The Oakwood Pub, were also evacuated as a precaution.

Residents gathered in Glossop Market Hall, which remained open to provide shelter during the incident. MyActive Glossop also offered its facilities should the evacuation have continued into the night.

In an update issued later that evening, Derbyshire Police confirmed that Army bomb disposal teams had assessed the device and established that it did not contain any explosives. The incident was then stood down and residents were allowed to return to their homes shortly afterwards.

The cordon was lifted at around 10pm, bringing the incident to a close after almost four hours of disruption.
