A woman in her 70s has died following a serious collision at the border of Tintwistle which led to the A628 Manchester Road being closed for several hours and caused traffic chaos through the village.
The collision happened at around 2.30pm on Wednesday 19th August and involved a black Nissan Pixo and a silver Renault Clio.
The driver of the Renault, a woman from the Hyde area, was pronounced dead at the scene. Her next of kin have been informed.
A man in his 20s, also from the Hyde area, who was driving the Nissan, was arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving and remains in police custody.
The road was closed for much of the afternoon and evening while emergency services and collision investigators attended the scene, with the closure causing significant disruption and heavy traffic through Tintwistle. The road reopened at around 9pm.
The tragedy comes just weeks after another fatal accident on the same stretch of road, prompting renewed calls from local residents for measures to improve safety, including the possible installation of speed bumps and other traffic-calming measures.
Police are continuing their investigation and are appealing for witnesses to come forward. Officers are particularly keen to speak to anyone who saw the collision and has not yet spoken to police, as well as anyone with dashcam or CCTV footage which could assist with enquiries.
