A night of dancing delight

Amateur dancers took to the floor for a night of fundraising and entertainment to raise more than £10,000 for Dr Kershaw's Hospice. 

A spin-off of the popular BBC One show Strictly Come Dancing, Strictly Kershaw's saw nine members of the local community strut their stuff on the dancefloor at Queen Elizabeth Hall alongside their professional counterparts.

The final amount of what has been raised is not yet known, but the much-anticipated event, now in its fourth year, was once again well supported to raise vital funds for the Royton-based hospice, which is currently undergoing a £3.5million rebuild.

The dancers took on the challenge of learning how to dance ballroom and Latin favourites, the waltz and the cha cha cha.

Amateur dancers who lined up for the event included Kamil Waligora from UK Electronics, James Taylor-Scott from Glo Gym, Dr Kershaw’s Volunteer Co-Ordinator, Nikki Butterworth, Lii Raudsep from The White Hart, Joanne Fitton from Beaverbrook’s Jewellers in Oldham town centre, Hospice Volunteer Pat Radcliffe, Emily Walker from Coop Funeral Care, Ryan King from local catering equipment distributors, LLK and finally Helena Coburn from George Hill. 

The overall winner was Emily Walker from Coop Funeral Care, who took home the infamous Strictly Kershaw’s glitterball trophy. 

The amateur dancers were paired up with professionals from the International Dance Teacher Association who kindly donated their time in order to train the amateur dancers and get them ready to take to the floor.

The event - a highlight in Dr Kershaw’s calendar - was hosted by actor Jeffery Longmore, who is often found gracing the Oldham Coliseum’s stage as the Pantomime Dame. 

Guests on the night also enjoyed a champagne reception, a two-course meal, dances by professional dancers and a raffle and auction.
