Yellow weather warning for ice and snow on Monday night

The Met Office has issued a yellow weather warning for snow and ice from Monday night into Tuesday morning.

It covers a large chunk of central Great Britain, including Tameside and the High Peak, where exposed and elevated ground could receive up to 20cm of snow.

The weather also brings a small chance of:

  • Power cuts

  • Untreated pavements and cycle paths becoming impassable

  • Bus and train journeys being affected

  • Travel delays

  • Some rural communities being cut off

“A period of rain, sleet and snow will occur during Monday evening, overnight into Tuesday morning,” said a Met Office statement.

“The most likely scenario is for most of the snow to accumulate on hills, with 5 to 10cm possible above 200 metres and perhaps as much as 15 to 20cm above 300 metres.

“There is a small chance of snow settling at lower levels, where 5 to 10cm would prove much more disruptive, but this remains very uncertain.”

Ice may form on untreated surfaces once any sleet or snow has cleared, making for potential slip hazards.

The weather warning extends from North Wales across to Lincolnshire and stretching as far north as the Scottish Borders.
