High Peak MP Jon Pearce has been asked whether he still has confidence in Keir Starmer as pressure grows on the Labour leader following recent local election results.
Labour suffered significant losses in this month’s local elections, with setbacks across England and Wales prompting renewed scrutiny of Sir Keir’s leadership and growing unease within parts of the party.
Four Labour MPs have resigned and around 90 have reportedly called for the Prime Minister to resign immediately or announce a timetable for stepping down, while others have voiced concerns about the direction of the party. More than 110 MPs have signed a statement backing Sir Keir and opposing a leadership challenge - including MP Jon Pearce.
Sir Keir has insisted he will not resign, saying he remains focused on delivering for the country despite mounting criticism.
The Glossop Chronicle contacted Mr Pearce to ask about his support for Sir Keir as Prime Minister and Labour leader, and what message he would give to constituents concerned about divisions within the party.
A spokesperson said he was unable to comment.
Mr Pearce has represented High Peak since 2024 and, as a serving Parliamentary Private Secretary to the Prime Minister, he is considered part of the government’s wider support team within Parliament.
The debate over Labour’s leadership and direction is expected to continue in the coming weeks as MPs assess the implications of the election results and the party’s prospects at the next general election.
