Tameside unites to speak up against violence towards women and girls

Groups across Tameside are joining forces with the council to tackle violence against women and girls (VAWG) as the borough marks White Ribbon 2025.

The national campaign launches on White Ribbon Day, 25 November, and continues with 16 Days of Action, urging men and boys to reflect on their attitudes and behaviours in order to help create a community where women and girls feel safe, equal and respected.

This year’s theme, “We Speak Up,” calls on men to challenge sexist comments, inappropriate behaviour and harmful stereotypes, actions often dismissed as harmless, but which contribute to a wider culture of inequality. The campaign emphasises the role of men as allies, recognising that VAWG is not solely a women’s issue.

Across the 16 days, the council will collaborate with a wide range of community spaces, including pubs, bars, sports clubs, gyms, schools, GP surgeries and dental practices, to share information and encourage conversations.

A key focus this year is on supporting women who run, following research from The University of Manchester which found that over two-thirds of female runners across Greater Manchester and Merseyside have experienced abuse. Local running club East Cheshire Harriers has pledged its support and will help spread the campaign message to its members.

Council licensing officers are distributing White Ribbon posters and beer mats to pubs and clubs as part of Operation Nightsafe, ensuring venues play an active role in promoting safety and respect.

Curzon Ashton FC will also lend its backing. Working with Bridges Partnership, Tameside’s specialist domestic abuse support service, the club will host a White Ribbon information stand at its 29 November home match.

Additional information stalls will appear at Clarendon Shopping Centre and Tesco Hattersley, offering the public advice on reporting concerns, seeking support, and becoming campaign ambassadors.

Training sessions will also be delivered for staff and professionals on issues including stalking, harassment, and non-fatal strangulation, helping frontline workers better understand and respond to VAWG.

Throughout the campaign, council ambassadors will run briefing sessions aimed at encouraging more men to speak out against unacceptable behaviour within their workplaces, friendship groups and communities.
