Portland Basin Museum is bringing Christmas cheer to Tameside this winter with a packed programme of free and bespoke festive activities suitable for all ages.
From creative crafts to seasonal music and unique gift shopping, residents are invited to join in the celebrations throughout late November and early December.
The festive fun begins on Sunday 30 November, when the museum takes part in Museum Shop Sunday, an international event that encourages people to “shop with purpose” and support cultural venues. Visitors can browse the museum’s gift shop, which is open Tuesday to Sunday, 10am–4pm and explore its range of retro and heritage-inspired gifts and toys. A brand-new collection of confectionery, inspired by the old-fashioned grocery store on the museum’s 1920s street, is also now available and ideal for stocking fillers or festive food hampers.
Families can look forward to a day of hands-on creativity on Saturday 6 December, when the museum hosts a free children’s craft day from 11am to 3pm. Young visitors will have the chance to make their own elf hats and mini elf decorations, perfect for getting into the Christmas spirit.
The celebrations continue on Sunday 7 December, as Little Owl Artisan brings a Christmas craft market to the museum from 10.30am to 3pm. With a wide selection of handmade gifts, treats, and unique creations, the market offers an ideal opportunity to pick up something special for loved ones. Adding to the festive atmosphere, St John’s Band Droylsden will perform seasonal brass band music between 12.30pm and 2pm.
Cllr Feeley, Tameside Council’s Executive Member for Lifelong Learning and Culture, said: “We are delighted to be hosting free festive activities for residents this winter. Portland Basin is a wonderful space, and we encourage everyone to come along, enjoy the celebrations, and support our local businesses.”
