Free four-week course supports older jobseekers in Tameside

Age UK Tameside is based on Katherine Street in Ashton.

Age UK Tameside is supporting residents aged 50 and over to take their next career steps through its free four-week Next Steps Employability Course, designed to boost confidence, skills, and job-readiness.

The course is led by Sarah, Age UK Tameside’s Next Steps Employability Coach, who works closely with older jobseekers looking to re-enter the workforce, move into volunteering, or change career direction.

“My role involves supporting people over 50 who are looking to get into employment or volunteering, or who simply want a career change,” Sarah explained. “The course is really about building confidence and resilience and helping people approach job searching and employers with a positive mindset.”

Across the four weeks, participants take part in sessions covering: confidence-building and resilience, CV writing and what employers look for, job-searching techniques, interview skills and digital skills support, for those who need it.

Sarah says many older jobseekers face challenges because they may not have applied for work in years.

“Over-50s are working longer and later in life but finding a job can feel daunting - especially if digital skills or CV writing aren’t familiar,” she said. “Age UK Tameside supports people with whatever they need to move into employment, every step of the way.”

While the course is open to anyone in Tameside aged 50 or over, there is currently a particular focus on residents in the St Peter’s Ward in Ashton.

“It’s a central part of Ashton, and a number of organisations are working in that area,” Sarah explained. “By focusing there, we hope to provide a more holistic, joined-up offer for residents.”

To promote the course, Age UK Tameside works closely with the Jobcentre and attends community events across the borough.

“Word of mouth is powerful too,” Sarah added. “Connecting with local partners helps us reach the people who will really benefit from this support.”

Anyone interested in joining the Next Steps Employability Course can sign up easily.

“You can pop into Age UK Tameside, give us a call on 0161 308 5000, or email me at nextsteps@ageuktameside.com,” said Sarah. “I’m always happy to help.”
