One of Hyde’s most cherished pubs, The Sportsman, has been saved from closure and redevelopment after an extraordinary last-minute intervention sparked by community action.
Just days ago, the future of the historic pub looked bleak. After many years of trying, owner Geoff made the difficult decision to sell the building to developers, raising fears that the nearly 200-year-old landmark would be lost forever and replaced by flats.
For many local residents, the news came as a devastating blow. More than just a pub, The Sportsman has long been regarded as a second home. For some, particularly elderly residents, it has been a vital social lifeline.
Determined not to let another piece of Hyde’s history disappear, the community rallied, and a petition was launched.
Then, in a dramatic turn of events, hope arrived at the eleventh hour.
Moved by the strength of feeling shown by the community and the significance of the building itself, local firm Monopoly Properties stepped in to purchase The Sportsman, saving it from development and ensuring it will continue to operate as a pub.
Thanks to their intervention, and the tireless efforts of local campaigners, The Sportsman will reopen its doors this Friday 9th January at 12pm, with a celebratory opening event planned. Even better news for regulars is that the familiar staff will be returning, offering a warm welcome back to loyal customers.
The rescue means the pub remains firmly in local hands and secures its place at the heart of Hyde for many years to come.
