At least 400 streets in Greater Manchester were missed in post-Christmas bin collections

At least 400 streets in Greater Manchester didn’t have their bins collected in the post-Christmas and new year period. Several councils have published a full list of the hundreds of roads where rubbish and recyclables have not been picked up.

Many refuse crews have struggled with the snowy and icy conditions in the last week, meaning they have sometimes had to abandon collections. Other teams struggled to access streets due to increased numbers of cars parked up in residential streets in the days after the festive period, or experienced ‘operational issues’.

Many of the collections were the first pick ups since the holidays. With the increase in household waste around Christmas, that means hundreds of residents were left with a pile-up.

Several local authorities have said their waste collection teams are continuing to respond to reports of any missed streets ‘as quickly as possible’.

A number of councils did not provide details of the streets missed in bin collection runs. But Bury, Bolton, Manchester, Stockport, and Wigan all provide full details and lists of street names and details of which collections were missed when.

Of those who provided data, Bolton had the most missed locations, with 220 streets affected. Salford missed around 110 roads, Bury missed almost 60, and Wigan and Manchester both had no streets listed.

Individual council websites provide guidance on what to do if your bins were missed and a tool to report missed collections. Each local authority issues individual guidance on whether to leave your bins out or wait until the next collection date.

Tameside did not provide a full list of street addresses, but a spokesperson said: “Due to recent adverse weather some collections were delayed and teams are working hard to complete these as soon as possible.”
