Unique artwork with inspirational message to take centre stage at unit

DONATION: Dr Leslie Robinson with Jo Taylor and the artwork.

Visitors to a new state of the art Mammography Unit at Tameside and Glossop Integrated Care NHS FT will now be able to find inspiration in a unique piece of artwork.

The artwork hangs centre stage in the waiting area for the unit, part of the first phase of the ongoing £20 million Emergency Department redevelopment.

The picture, now hanging in Hartshead North at Tameside Hospital, was created and donated by Dr Leslie Robinson, a retired radiography teacher turned renowned artist.

Leslie explains that the picture was created as a reminder that behind every black and white mammography image is a colourful human being with their own unique story to tell.

This is exemplified by patient representative and research collaborator Jo Taylor from Saddleworth who lives with secondary breast cancer and founded the organisation ‘After Breast Cancer Diagnosis’ (ABC Diagnosis), to support people who have had been told they have a primary or secondary breast cancer.

The organisation provides practical and emotional help with a strong focus on maintaining health, fitness and wellbeing.

Jo, who is pictured right with Leslie, explains: “My own breast cancer was diagnosed in 2007 and one of the huge problems I’ve encountered regarding lack of information for breast cancer patients is the fact that many women, and men too, and even some GPs, are unaware of the red flag signs and symptoms that the disease has spread.

“To try and help combat this major issue, I designed a Secondary Breast Cancer infographic showing how to spot these red flags.

“Thankfully, this is now signposted by NHS England for use throughout the country.”
