Two Dukinfield schools awarded Tameside Young Carers School Award

Two Dukinfield schools have been awarded the Tameside Young Carers School Award.

All Saints Catholic College received the Silver award, while Rayner Stephens High School were awarded Bronze.

All Saints' Young Carer Lead and DDSL, Rebecca Moseley, said she recently rebranded and restructured the support Young Carers receive within the school which has had a "huge positive impact".

She added: "The Young Carer Co-Ordinator, Jo Keogh, is fantastic at organising and supporting events for the Young Carers and has lots of ideas in the pipeline."

Ms Gilligan, the headteacher, said: "We are extremely thrilled to have received this award because it is recognition for our pupils that are young carers; they dedicate their time and care to members of their family who need their support.

"This group of young people are an inspiration  to our school community and we are proud that they have received this award. Our school values have faith and family at the core and  our young carers embody these values every day of their lives."

One of the young carers said: “Since being at the School the Young Carers has changed a lot and they offer lots of support to help all the Young Carers. They are always there if you need to talk to them about any problems. They give us rewards and make sure we do not feel alone."

To earn the Bronze award, Rayner Stephens High School said their efforts included hosting a visit from MP candidate Jonathan Reynolds, who met with the school's young carers to hear their stories and understand their unique challenges.

A key component of Rayner Stephens’ approach has been raising awareness about the important role of young carers.

The school said Mrs. Fallon Thomas, the Young Carers Lead at the school, played a pivotal role in achieving this award.

"Young Carers awareness" has been the primary focus, with Mrs. Thomas organising assemblies and lessons during Personal Development time to educate others about the responsibilities and challenges faced by young carers.

Additionally, awareness packs have been distributed to staff, and a designated young carer notice board has been prominently displayed in the school, providing vital information and resources for all.

Executive Headteacher, Melanie Wicks said: "Rayner Stephens High School remains committed to providing a supportive and inclusive environment for all students, ensuring that young carers receive the recognition and assistance they deserve in order to succeed, whilst remaining committed to their caring duties.

"Mrs Thomas has done a tremendous job to not only support our young carers, but to raise awareness amongst our school community."
