Thief jailed after stealing car and bikes

A prolific thief has been jailed for two years after pleading guilty to a string of offences committed earlier this year and in late 2024.

Dominic Baker, 21, of no fixed abode, was seen speeding through Stockport in a stolen Toyota Prius in the early hours of Saturday January 18.

In the police chase that followed, he travelled along the M60 to Denton Island before racing through 30mph zones in North Reddish and Gorton at over 80mph.

After having his tyres stung twice, Baker crashed the car on Mount Road in Gorton before being found washing dishes in a house nearby.

As well as pleading guilty to stealing the Prius, he also admitted to dangerous driving, driving without insurance, driving without a licence and possession of cocaine on the same night.

He also entered guilty pleas to stealing three push bikes between September and November 2024.

Detective Constable James Maskrey from GMP Serious Collision Investigation Unit, said: “Today’s result shows how we can catch offenders utilising the various resources we have, such as specialist drivers, and our helicopter team.

“Communities should not have to put up with criminals taking their vehicles and driving dangerously through the streets where they live.

“Anyone thinking about engaging in criminal activity should think twice, we will catch you and you will be held responsible.”

Baker was also banned from driving for two years at Manchester Crown Court on Thursday March 6, and will need an extended retest before being allowed back on the road.
