Awareness Walk and Candlelit Vigil to Promote Hope, Connection and Suicide Prevention Thursday 10 September 2026
The Anthony Seddon Fund (TASFund) is inviting residents from across Tameside and beyond to come together on Thursday 10 September 2026 for its annual World Suicide Prevention Day Awareness Walk and Candlelit Vigil, a powerful community event dedicated to raising awareness, remembering loved ones, reducing stigma and showing that support is always available.
Held as part of the international observance of World Suicide Prevention Day, this year's event embraces the global theme "Changing the Narrative on Suicide", encouraging people to start compassionate conversations, challenge stigma and help create communities where nobody feels alone.
Participants will gather at 5:00pm at Tameside Wellness Centre in Denton before taking part in an approximately three-mile awareness walk into Hyde town centre. Walking together through local streets and public spaces, participants will help raise visibility for suicide prevention while demonstrating the power of community support and connection.
The walk is expected to last between one and one-and-a-half hours, with information stalls available at the finish location before a moving candlelit vigil at 8:00pm, offering an opportunity to remember those lost to suicide and stand together in hope for the future.
"This event is about bringing people together," said Ben, TASFund Operations Manager. "It is a chance to remember loved ones, support one another and reinforce the message that suicide can be prevented. By starting conversations and showing compassion, we can help ensure that nobody has to face difficult times alone."
World Suicide Prevention Day takes place every year on 10 September and was established in 2003 by the International Association for Suicide Prevention in collaboration with the World Health Organisation. The day brings communities around the world together to raise awareness, reduce stigma and promote suicide prevention.
For TASFund, the annual event has become an important tradition. Since 2014, the charity has united the Tameside community each September to encourage open conversations about mental health, honour loved ones and remind people that help and hope are always possible.
Community members can register to attend the walk, the vigil or both. Participants also have the option of purchasing a World Suicide Prevention Day T-shirt for £10, helping increase visibility and spark conversations about suicide prevention. T-shirts are available in sizes XS to 5XL, with orders closing on Saturday 30th August 2026.
TASFund is also seeking volunteer marshals to help welcome participants, support people along the route and assist with the safe running of the event.
Most importantly, the charity wants people to know that support is available all year round. Whether someone is struggling themselves, worried about a loved one or looking for guidance, TASFund offers a range of peer support, wellbeing activities, bereavement support and crisis support.
