A stolen van was abandoned in the middle of the road on the Tameside-Oldham border yesterday afternoon (Saturday, August 3).
The white van was reported missing in Tameside before being left on Lees New Road, where it was secured by a police community support officer and towed away.
“St Mary’s PCSO Andy Bigland located a stolen vehicle this afternoon on Lees New Road on the border of Oldham/Tameside,” read a GMP statement.
“This vehicle had been abandoned in the middle of the road and was showing stolen from the Tameside Division.
“Vehicle has now been recovered.”
Theft of vehicles is at its highest level for fifteen years in England and Wales, with 130,521 reports of them being stolen in 2022/23, the latest figures available.
12,950 vans were stolen across the UK last year according to the DVLA, an 18% increase on the previous reporting period.
No arrests have been made for Saturday’s offence, but anyone with information can contact the police’s non-emergency 101 service.
