Stalybridge school pupils become 'pollution police' on patrol

Children at Stalybridge's Gorse Hall Primary School have once again been going the extra mile to make a difference within the school and the wider community.

The school’s Eco Committee play an active part every Clean Air Day, with pupils learning about the dangers of pollution and carrying that message to a wider audience - especially road users and parents or others who might park near the school. The charity Global Action Plan stage the national Clean Air Day each year.

‘Clean up our Air to look after our young minds’ was the theme of the campaign this year.

Activities included making an awareness video ‘We Want Clean Air!’ and the Eco Committee also hosted a whole school assembly, highlighting the dangers that polluted air can have on children’s developing brains, hearts and lungs.

Pupils discussed simple lifestyle changes that can be made by walking to school, using public transport, cycling or scooting, car sharing and turning off idling engines.

School Eco Coordinator Kathleen Hughes said: “This is our seventh year of highlighting the health dangers of breathing polluted air and the children were really excited about delivering a creative approach by sharing information leaflets, dressing up as ‘Pollution Police’ and also handing out yellow warning tickets to motorists.”
