Rotarian Ian makes history

Ian Cochrane

Proud new role for Dukinfield Rotary Club member Ian Cochrane

Rotarian Ian Cochrane has become the first member in the 62-year history of Dukinfield Rotary Club to be appointed District Governor for Rotary in North West England and the Isle of Man.

Ian, who lives in Stalybridge with his partner Susan, officially takes up the prestigious role this week.

A familiar face across Tameside, Ian spent more than 40 years working for Tameside Council. During his career he rose through the ranks to become Head of Democratic Services before later being appointed Town Manager. He took early retirement in 2015.

Retirement, however, has proved anything but quiet. Ian has devoted countless hours to community volunteering, serving as Organising Secretary for Stalybridge Carnival, which celebrated its 50th anniversary on Sunday, while also supporting a local foodbank and numerous community projects.

Among the initiatives of which he is most proud is the Stalybridge Friday Afternoon Social, which he established in 2021 as communities emerged from the Covid pandemic. The group continues to thrive to this day.

Ian also served for many years as Chair of Governors at two local primary schools before stepping down in July 2023 to allow more time to prepare for his Rotary leadership role.

As District Governor, Ian will support and oversee Rotary clubs across the North West England and Isle of Man district, encouraging membership growth, strengthening community engagement and helping clubs deliver projects that reflect the wider aims and values of Rotary International.

Preparation for the position has been extensive. Before taking office, Ian completed Rotary's two-year leadership programme, serving first as District Governor Nominee and then District Governor Elect.

Ian said: “I am very proud and honoured to take over this role. I am sure it is going to be a busy but rewarding year.

“It was a bit daunting at first when I began my District Governor journey, but it has been a brilliant and memorable experience. There have been a significant number of online training modules and face-to-face seminars/workshops with my District Governor cohort from across the globe.

“This culminated with mine and Susan's attendance at the International Assembly in Orlando in January. It was clearly the highlight of my District Governor journey. The experience filled me with passion and confidence that I am more than ready to make a difference as the incoming District Governor.

“In my recent key note speech to members, I reminded them that it is important that we should continue to provide financial support to our local groups and organisations. But, more importantly we need to remember what it says on the tin ‘We are People of Action’. Where we come up with an idea in our club meetings and then (sometimes in collaboration with others) develop a viable project which is not just appreciated, but also creates a lasting impact in our communities and beyond.”

Ian’s appointment marks a significant milestone not only for Dukinfield Rotary Club but also for Tameside, with the long-serving public servant and community volunteer now representing Rotary at district level while championing projects that make a tangible difference to communities across the North West and the Isle of Man.
