Community members from homelessness charity Emmaus Mossley have completed a fundraising hike to Scafell Pike in support of RSPB Dove Stone.
On Monday, 21 September, 10 people from Emmaus Mossley, including people who have experienced homelessness, took on the demanding nine-mile hike. Starting in Borrowdale, the team trekked the Corridor route to the summit of Scafell Pike and back down via Esk Hause.
Marek, a member of the Emmaus team who completed the challenge, said: “The weather wasn’t perfect, but we did get some beautiful views of the hills. This walk was a very long way and difficult in parts. I love walking though and cannot wait for our next one.”
Emmaus Mossley is a charity that empowers people to overcome homelessness for good. Whilst resident at Emmaus, each person is supported to build their confidence, self-esteem, skills and work experience to achieve their goals.
People supported by Emmaus are encouraged to carry out acts of solidarity to support good causes and people in greater need. The Scafell Pike team chose to raise funds to support the renewal of RSPB Dove Stone after this summer’s devastating wildfires.
Set within the Peak District National Park, RSPB Dove Stone is a dramatic landscape that's home to an array of wildlife including birds like Dunlin, Curlew and Golden Plover. Over the summer, two significant wildfires spread through the landscape and destroyed between 800 and 1000 hectares of vital habitat.
Kate Hanley, Site Manager at RSPB Dove Stone, said: “We are overwhelmed by the generosity of volunteers from Emmaus Mossley, who selflessly took part in this hike to raise money for RSPB Dove Stone. The money raised will help us look after the site and improve our preparedness to wildfire events in the future. We are extremely grateful to the volunteers for their support.”
People supported by Emmaus Mossley have previously taken part in volunteer days with The RSPB to help improve the habitat around Dove Stone. The charity's Scafell Pike fundraising hike for RSPB Dove Stone has so far raised more than £600 towards habitat restoration.
