A indoor padel club could be built in Ashton. Fusion Padel Club has applied for planning permission to build four courts on the grounds of Ashton Cricket Club.

The proposed clubhouse will use a repurposed 40ft container and will provide space for player check-in; equipment hire; storage; changing facilities and a social area.

External seating will also be provided, offering a resting and viewing area for players and spectators visiting the facility.

The shipping container-style development would be to the west of the cricket pitch, which will be unaffected.

Padel is a racket sport that blends elements of tennis and squash, typically played in doubles on an enclosed court measuring 10 metres wide by 20 metres long, which is slightly smaller than doubles tennis court.

The court is surrounded by a combination of glass and mesh walls, which keep the ball in play and allow for rebound shots, which is one of the defining features that make the game dynamic and strategic.

Planning papers read: “Fusion Padel is a young, locally based company focused on delivering high-quality padel facilities that complement and enhance existing sports provision.

“Their proposed development in Ashton has been carefully designed to integrate with and support the neighbouring cricket club, helping to create a stronger and more diverse sporting hub for the area.

“Bringing padel to this part of Tameside is a significant opportunity. The sport is growing rapidly across the UK, yet there is currently limited provision locally.

“Fusion Padel is playing an important role in addressing this gap by investing in a modern, accessible facility that offers residents a new way to be active, social and engaged in sport.

“The facility will increase footfall and visibility across the wider site, creating opportunities for shared events, cross-club collaboration and broader community engagement.

“Fusion Padel is committed to being an active part of the local area and delivering a facility that can be enjoyed by people of all ages and abilities, supporting the long-term sustainability of local sporting provision.”
