A hiker’s Christmas walk ended in a suspected broken ankle and a three-hour call-out by two local mountain rescue units.
One member in a group of ramblers was injured on the moors around Dovestones, with rescuers from Oldham Mountain Rescue Team (MRT) rushing to her aid on the afternoon of Christmas Day.
After locating the casualty with Phone Find technology, an assessment showed that she would need to be carried off the hillside from close to Ashway Stone.
The Greenfield-based crew called on their colleagues from the Holme Valley MRT for help while the other hikers walked to safety in daylight.
“The casualty’s ankle was splinted, she was kept warm, and she was loaded onto a stretcher,” said a spokesperson for Oldham MRT.
“By the time we started the carry off it was dark. Eventually, we reached the waiting ambulance down near the reservoir for the onward journey to hospital.”
In all, 16 people from across the two mountain rescue teams were involved in the rescue.
