Tens of thousands enjoy a summer of fun in Tameside

Over 13,000 people enjoyed Tameside’s cultural events over the summer including a ginormous sandpit, arts and crafts by the river, and theatre performances in the park.

Tameside Council offered a varied array of free and low-cost activities, events and sessions throughout the school holidays for residents and visitors to enjoy.

Events took place across Tameside’s parks, libraries, Family Hubs, Portland Basin Museum, Stalybridge Victoria Market Hall and Ashton Town Centre.

The much-loved Theatre in the Park sessions, often with sell out shows, brought in around 1400 visitors over the course of eight shows. While Outdoor Arts sessions offered screen-free fun, including fantastic crafts and music, out in nature.

A record number of 1875 attended this years’ fantastic ‘Our Museum Day’ which brought together crafts, heritage, dance and fun for all the family at Portland Basin Museum.

Tameside Libraries has hosted 36 events celebrating this year's Children's Summer Reading Challenge, Read to the Beat. Highlights included puppet and bee drum workshops, silent discos, hip hop DJ experiences, family music-making sessions, storytelling events, film screenings and preschool Mini Challenge story times.

The library events attracted more than 1,300 children and 1,000 adults, while five pop-up library events in local parks helped promote the Summer Reading Challenge and encourage children to keep reading over the summer. More than 1,700 children have signed up for the Summer Reading Challenge.

Family Hubs welcomed over 1,000 children to their sessions too, including Story Walks, Wellies in the Wood, and lots more.

Tameside Council’s Executive Member for Culture and Lifelong Learning, Cllr Leanne Feeley, said: “It’s wonderful to hear how much residents and visitors enjoyed this year’s summer programme. We know keeping children entertained throughout the six-week holiday can be a challenge for many families, so it’s fantastic to see so many people taking part in the activities, sessions and events on offer.
