Major step forward for new multi-storey Stalybridge car park

Plans for a new multi-storey car park in Stalybridge have taken a major step forward, supporting future growth, investment and town centre regeneration.

Following a successful tender exercise, Tameside Council intends to appoint Galliford Try PLC as contractor for the new multi-storey car park.

The 171-space facility will be built on the site of the existing Waterloo Road surface car park and will provide modern parking provision for residents, businesses and visitors, helping to support the town centre and future development opportunities.

Galliford Try PLC has a strong track record of delivering high-profile regeneration projects, including Stockport Exchange, the award-winning commercial and mixed-use development located next to Stockport railway station.

The scheme forms part of the council's wider ambitions for Stalybridge West, an area identified as a key opportunity to create a vibrant town centre in a highly sustainable location that supports the local economy.

It also contributes to the proposed Mayoral Development Corporation (MDC) for Ashton and Stalybridge, which aims to accelerate regeneration, unlock investment and deliver new homes, jobs and spaces across the towns, helping to maximise the area’s long-term growth potential.

Throughout the construction period, every effort will be made to maintain a drop-off area for the nearby medical centre. All other council-operated car parks in the town will remain open.

Over the coming months some site preparation works will be carried out on the Castle Street car park to then be fully open as a temporary car park for use when the Waterloo Road car park is shut during the construction period.

In addition, two other sites in the town on Bridge Street and Caroline Street are also being prepared for future residential development, to create up to 250 new homes helping to meet local housing needs.

Tameside Council Executive Member for Growth, Housing and Homelessness, Cllr Andrew McLaren said: "This is an important milestone for Stalybridge and demonstrates our commitment to delivering the infrastructure needed to support the town's future growth.

"The new multi-storey car park will improve access to the town centre and support local businesses. It is a key part of our wider vision for Stalybridge West, where we are working to bring forward new homes and create a thriving residential community close to shops, services and public transport.

"Alongside the car park, the remediation of development sites will help unlock significant opportunities for regeneration, supporting our ambition to create places where people want to live, work and visit."
