Further road safety improvements planned for Tameside

Plans to develop eleven possible road safety projects across the borough have been approved as part of ongoing work to make roads safer for everyone.

The decision was made by Tameside Council's Executive Cabinet after receiving an update on the borough's Highway Safety Programme. The programme looks at information about road accidents and the condition of roads to find places where safety could be improved.

Following the approval, studies can now take place at identified locations to see what improvements may be possible. Any future work would still need public consultation, detailed designs and funding before it can go ahead.

The next phase of works will focus on developing and designing potential improvements at the following locations: 

• Greenside Lane (Cambridge Road to Chappell Road), Droylsden
• Ashton Road / Turner Street / Egerton Street junction, Denton
• Market Street (Dunkirk Street to Moorside Street), Droylsden
• Ashton Road / Worthington Way junction, Denton
• Mottram Road, Hyde
• Two Trees Lane, Denton
• Underwood Road, Hyde
• Shepley Road, Audenshaw
• Denton Road, Audenshaw
• Talbot Road, Hyde
• Huddersfield Road (Grove Road to Staley Road), Stalybridge

Whether these projects go ahead in the future will depend on what people tell us during consultation, the final designs and the funding available.

This follows good progress on the programme, with highway safety improvements already completed at Market Street in Droylsden and Ashton Road in Denton. Works at Beaufort Road in Ashton-under-Lyne are now substantially complete and will be finished shortly, while work continues on schemes at Darnton Road in Ashton-under-Lyne and part of Ridge Hill Lane in Stalybridge.

Improvements so far include upgraded pedestrian crossings, new dropped kerbs and tactile paving, improved road markings and signage, traffic calming measures, carriageway resurfacing and junction improvements designed to reduce collision risks and improve safety for pedestrians, cyclists and motorists.

Councillor Stephen Homer, Executive Member for Towns, Transport and Connectivity, said:

"We're making good progress on our Highway Safety Programme, with several schemes already completed and more improvements now moving into the next stage of development.

"In this next phase we will develop proposals for 11 further locations across Tameside. This will create a pipeline of potential highway safety improvements, ensuring we are well placed to deliver schemes where they are most needed as funding becomes available.

"These improvements are designed to make our roads safer, improve accessibility and create a better environment for everyone travelling around the borough, whether that's by car, bike or walking and wheeling.”
