Carrbrook garden contest returns in 'blooming' style

The Carrbrook Garden Competition was back in full bloom again this year and continues to grow from strength to strength.

A special awards event was held at Carrbrook Community Hub, on Broadbent Close, marking the third year of the contest.

Many participated with the competition hailed another ‘blooming success’ with each entrant receiving a framed signed certificate from the Civic Mayor of Tameside, Cllr Tafheen Sharif, and competition organiser, Stalybridge North Councillor Jan Jackson.

The winners also received trophies and vouchers.

The Mayor helped present the awards and cut a celebratory birthday cake, marking the third anniversary of the competition.

Cllr Jackson said: “Thanks go to everyone involved to make this event successful. It is one of the many highlights in Carrbrook which I enjoy organising for residents. It’s an opportunity to showcase the gardens of green fingered residents and find out about the stories behind the gardens. In my eyes all the entrants are winners.”

This year Jan thanked all of her colleagues for helping organise the competition, adding she was particularly grateful to social landlord Mosscare St Vincent’s and Buckton Vale Quarry for their support, and Raja Bros which supplied refreshments on the day, as well as the Carrbrook Community Hub residents, who helped facilitate the event.

“We are making improvements each year with more entrants and this year we had a DJ to provide background music, which made a big difference.

“There were heart-warming stories about the benefits of gardening and we also had an additional award this year for ‘The most meaningful garden’.

“This award wasn’t for the best kept garden, but for demonstrating the need for that individual garden and its personal meaning.

She added the contest is judged by experienced garden judges and next year one of those will be Clive Patrick, who won this year’s ‘Best Kept Garden’ category.
