Midweek football round-up: Tigers win away at Hebburn

Hyde United got back to winning ways in the NPL Premier Division with a 2-0 victory away to Hebburn Town on Tuesday.

Both sides had chances in the early stages, with Hyde going close after Brad Holmes slipped in Frankie Sinfield who forced a smart save from Kieran Hunter.

Minutes later it was the Tigers’ shot stopper Callum Hiddleston who was called into action, tipping Olly Martins goal bound header over the crossbar.

Joao Gomes could and perhaps should have put the hosts ahead early in the second half, but the forward could only direct his close-range header over the bar.

Visitors Hyde then punished their opponents on the hour mark, with substitute Ayo Quadri firing his side ahead with a wonderful long-range strike.

Quadri could have had a second ten minutes from time, but the winger saw his effort cannon back out off the crossbar.

With five minutes to play, Nick Spooner’s side all but sealed the win with Matty Fearnley tapping in at the back post to double his side’s lead.

Following the win, Spooner told the club’s YouTube channel it was a “Thoroughly deserved victory.”

“I’m pleased for the supporters tonight, they’ve come a long way and I’m glad we’ve rewarded them for that- it was a hell of a performance,” he added.

The win sees the Tigers sit in 10th place, ahead of Lancaster City’s visit to the Project Solar Stadium this weekend.

Elsewhere, following last Saturday’s win over Buxton, Curzon Ashton slipped back outside the play-off spots with a 1-0 defeat away to Southport on Tuesday.

Despite a dominant first half, The Nash found themselves behind at the break after the ball broke to Dior Angus in the penalty area who slotted home two minutes from time.

The hosts had to call on former Curzon goalkeeper Chris Renshaw moments earlier, who denied new loan signing Conor Falls from close range, tipping his header onto the crossbar.

Despite a late flurry of chances from Craig Mahon’s side, the Sandgrounders were able to hold on and take all three points.

“It’s frustrating,” Mahon told the club’s YouTube channel following the loss.

“We made a couple of changes tonight because IBR [Isaac Buckley-Ricketts] and Stefan [Mols] have played almost every game this year and we wanted to give them a rest.

“When we make those changes, we expect whoever comes in to step up, but we just didn’t get to our usual levels tonight.

“We played some good football but lacked quality in the final third- we lacked that killer instinct.

The loss sees The Nash sit in 8th place in the National League North, ahead of Scarborough Athletic’s visit to the Tameside Stadium this Saturday.
