Young people learn about the contruction trade thanks to partnership with FCHO

Oldham College staff Ryan Maher, Mark Barratt and Mohammed Kharmisa with T Level students.

Oldham College T Level students joined First Choice Homes Oldham (FCHO) staff last week to get real world experience of construction at a development site.

The 13 young people were taken to the £4.5m Arca Construct scheme of 19 eco-friendly homes at a former garage site on Thatcher Street in Hathershaw.

All are in their second year studying design, surveying and planning T Levels and were given a walk around the site on Wednesday, October 8 by experienced Arca and FCHO staff to see foundations, structure, services and layout.

One of the students Zaynab Farooq, (19), said: “This has been a new experience for me, going from learning in the classroom to actually being out on site.

“I’ve always liked numbers and surveying, and I’m really interested in different types of buildings. I often find myself curious about how buildings are made.”

Speaking after the visit, FCHO Director of People and Culture, Richard Sandiford, explained the housing association partners with the college to offer work placements to T Level students and three took part earlier this year.

He said: “It was great to have the students on site where they could see how some of the knowledge they have learnt in theory happens in practice.

“FCHO is committed to helping the next generation of key construction professions gain as much experience as possible and our valuable partnership with Oldham College is important in achieving that ambition.”
