TPE welcomes first apprentices on new “express start” scheme

TPE apprentices 2025 with Early Careers Manager Lindsay Penney.

TransPennine Express (TPE) has launched a new apprenticeship scheme with its first intake of recruits now embarking on careers in the rail industry.

Called express start, the initiative is designed to give young people the chance to gain experience across a range of departments before choosing a specialist path. It opens the door to those who might not have previously considered working in rail.

Among the new starters are Daisy Heywood, Callum Huntley, Heather Booton, Tom Duddridge, Kian McDonald and Olly Gower, who make up the very first express start cohort.

They are joined by Tamikka Reid, beginning a marketing apprenticeship, and Ahmed Bah, who is undertaking an apprenticeship in IT.

Together, they will spend time across different areas of the company, building their skills and discovering the roles that best suit their ambitions.

The aim of the new scheme to help apprentices settle in and identify where their passions lie, while ensuring each placement provides a real depth of experience.

As part of the programme, they will rotate through departments such as revenue protection, commercial, business delivery, planning, customer service, performance and administration, with opportunities also available in areas such as sustainability.

Lindsay Penney, Early Careers Manager at TPE said: “We’re delighted to welcome this year’s apprentices as we introduce the express start programme.

“This new scheme has been created to engage with young people who may not yet know where they want to go in their careers, giving them the chance to try out different areas of the business and find their place in rail.”

TPE is proud to support the next generation of railway talent and looks forward to seeing the contribution the apprentices will make as they begin their careers in the industry.
