Spreading the love in Grotton, Springhead and Lees

New artwork has gone up in Lees, Springhead and Grotton, celebrating the beautiful villages and the people in them.

Councillors Sam Al-Hamdani and Mark Kenyon funded the new signs, after as a Parish Councillor, he tried to have artwork put up when the Tour of Britain came through Saddleworth, only to discover that there were no fixings in place in the villages to be able to do it.

Cllr Al-Hamdani said: “I think it’s really important to be able to visibly celebrate the best of our villages and special events, and putting these up is a small but very visible thing we can do to make this happen."

The signs, which have gone up in the centre of Lees, Springhead and Grotton, currently show sunset over Leesbrook Mill, the linear park, and a heart done by the Saddleworth yarn bombers.

Cllr Kenyon added: “Going forward, we want to have a wide range of artwork to look at both the history and the future of our villages. Whether it’s celebrating the mill heritage of the villages – Lees, Springhead and Grotton had at least 44 mills in their heyday – or looking at the next generations by running competitions with the local schools; whatever we can do to remind people of the great things that there are about living in our area.”

Cllr Al-Hamdani continued: “We can also use them to celebrate major events – I have already asked to see how long it will take to produce new banners and have them installed. I would love to use them to celebrate the Platinum Jubilee in June.”

  • Latics 1 – 2 Salford City: Latics come up short against ugly Salford side

This was the first game for a few months in which Latics have played without the prospect of achieving a play-off place. Throughout February and March, Latics went on an astonishing run that put them in charge of their own destiny – if they had won every game from that point, they would have been in the play-offs no matter what happened elsewhere. The team they would have had to displace from the play-off spots (there was only one) was Salford City.
