The Grotton playground has been refreshed and refurbished, with new life brought to this neighbourhood play park. Everyone is invited to join the official opening taking place on Saturday, 15th August.
The playground was first opened by the late Liberal Democrat Councillor Tom Beeley in 2007, following many months of campaigning for Oldham Council to provide a new playground. The previous one, on Old Mill Lane, had been vandalised and burnt down. This play area has been visited and loved by many generations over the years, however it was beginning to look worn and tired.
Councillor Alicia Marland said: “I have been involved in this project since early 2026 when I proposed an idea to Grotton Residents Association for the area to be refurbished and together we produced a grant application for the One Oldham Community Fund managed by Action Together.
“Several months later it was brilliant news that our bid for funding was successful and Oldham Council’s Greenspace team have been fantastic in designing and completing the work. It includes new animal graphics including a caterpillar, a new snakes and ladders game, replacement tarmac, soft landing zones and the ‘most uncomfortable seesaw in the world‘ has been replaced by an inclusive seesaw.
“I am delighted that this area has been renewed through working together with Grotton Residents Association and local community groups – it’s been rebuilt together for playing forever.”
The Saddleworth Parish Council Chair, Councillor Barbara Beeley, will be cutting the ribbon to re-open the playground at 2pm on Saturday 15th August. All residents and community members are welcome to attend.
