Motorists should ‘avoid’ the area around Manchester Street roundabout in Oldham after a car crash caused severe damage to traffic lights, the council warned.
Emergency repairs are taking place at the junction with Manchester Street and the Town Centre bypass. The road traffic accident took place on Friday, February 20, and caused damage to traffic controllers at the intersection between the highway and tram tracks.
Works are being carried out by TfGM and Urban Traffic Control. They are expected to last until at least today (Wednesday, February 25).
In a statement shared on social media, a council spokesperson said: “The Manchester Street Roundabout junction is currently closed due to emergency repairs to the traffic signals. A vehicle was involved in a road traffic collision on Friday lunchtime, causing severe damage to the signal controllers and power supplies.
“These works are essential for safety, particularly because of the interaction between trams and vehicles at this junction.
“Oldham Council is working closely with TfGM to help reduce congestion and will continue to provide updates until the junction fully reopens.”
Diversions are in place in the area, but drivers are being told to avoid the area and expect delays.
The collision caused two days of disruption for tram users over the weekend, but services have now resumed after TfGM completed emergency repairs on Saturday, February 21.
