An Oldham youth charity is marking Volunteers’ Week by launching an appeal for 15 new mentors as part of its 15th anniversary year.
Mahdlo Youth Zone is looking for volunteers aged 21 and over to join its mentoring programme and provide one-to-one support to young people across the borough.
Mahdlo’s mentoring programme provides support for young people aged eight to 19, and up to 25 for those with additional needs. Through weekly sessions over a period of 12 to 24 months, mentors help young people build confidence, raise aspirations, and work towards their future goals.
Mentors use their skills, life experience, and strengths to help young people navigate challenges by providing a positive and consistent presence in their lives.
Volunteers receive an enhanced DBS check, comprehensive training and ongoing support throughout their mentoring journey at Mahdlo.
The recruitment campaign forms part of Mahdlo’s 15th anniversary celebrations, which are taking place throughout 2026.
Marvin McKenzie, Mentoring Coordinator at Mahdlo Youth Zone, said: “Our mentors are a trusted presence in the lives of young people at a time when having someone in their corner can make a lasting impact.
“For many young people, having that regular face-to-face connection with an adult who listens, shows up every week and offers encouragement can help them realise what they’re capable of.
“We are looking for 15 new mentors as part of our 15th anniversary year, and I would encourage anyone considering volunteering to find out more.
“You do not need previous mentoring experience. What matters most is a willingness to build a positive relationship with a young person and support them to develop confidence and resilience.”
Joanne, mentor at Mahdlo Youth Zone, said: “I found out about mentoring on the Mahdlo website, but it took me a while to pluck up the courage to apply. I wish I’d done it sooner.
“I never could have imagined how much being a mentor would enrich my life. That was never my intention; I wanted to be the one to give!
“Mahdlo is fantastic to be a part of and the support I receive is unwavering. I would tell anyone who has a bit of time to give and wants to make even a tiny bit of difference to a young person’s life to sign up.
“You’ll be making a difference to your own life too, perhaps without realising it.”
No previous experience is required. Anyone interested in becoming a mentor can find out more and apply by visiting Mahdlo’s mentoring page or by emailing the team at mentoring@mahdloyz.org
