As Oldham Mountain Rescue Team team were arriving at base for their weekly evening training, a call came in reporting walkers in the Dove Stone area who had lost the path and, as darkness fell, were unable to identify their location.
Fortunately, they were able to share a description of their location.
NPAS and Oldham Mountain Rescue quickly mobilised search teams to the area. The National Police Air Service (NPAS) helicopter soon located two people near Birchen Clough and passed this information to OMRT ground teams.
Around 40 minutes after the initial call, team members reached the walkers. They were checked over by one of the Remote Rescue Medical Technicians, who confirmed there were no injuries, although they were cold. Team members then escorted them safely off the hill.
An OMRT spokesperson said: ”The walkers did exactly the right thing once they realised they were lost — they contacted Mountain Rescue, shared what they knew of their location, and stayed where they were to wait for help.
“As volunteer rescuers, we never judge and are always happy to help people get back to safety.”
Twenty seven members of OMRT were involved for one hour 30 minutes.
