An award-winning walking group is gearing up for a breathtaking 100-mile pilgrimage along the Camino de Santiago next month . . . all to raise funds for special causes.
The Failsworth Walking Group has been running for seven years and has 2,800 members, including those who get involved virtually.
Th local community group began in 2019 with the aim of improving wellbeing, reducing isolation and bringing people together through walking.
Since its formation, the group has received several awards for services to the community and are looking forward to taking part in the challenge along the Camino de Santiago – a famous historic walking route in Spain - for the third year running.
Group founder, Ann Garside explained: “We will be taking part in the 100-mile walk over five days and it is known as a pilgrimage. It will be through rural countryside and it is self-funded.
“Members of the group will be taking on the special challenge to raise funds for three charities that are very close to our hearts, supporting causes that have directly impacted members of our group and the wider community.”
About the group, she said: “It consists of walkers mostly, but we do have virtual walking, where I have been out filmed a walk, posted it and people can watch it online and march on the spot or get on the treadmill which can benefit them in their own home.”
Since starting the group, Ann has been honoured with the Community Fitness Organisation of the Year award at the North England Prestige Awards 2026 and was invited to attend the King’s Garden Party in June 2025, in recognition of her hard work – a hugely proud moment for everyone involved.

The group has become so popular that they have had members join from across the country including Coventry, Lincolnshire and Blackpool areas.
Members take part in walks throughout the year and are aimed at all types of fitness levels,. They cover street walking, off the beaten track local walks, reservoir walks and the peaks and fells and those that are feeling extra energetic can also hit the mountains.
In the winter months, members get involved in torch walks.
Overnight camping events, which are very popular, give members a cost-effective and social way to explore other areas of the country not so easily accessible with a day trip.

These walks are open to anyone, and you don’t have to book; you just turn up. A good pair of walking boots, comfy clothing, and waterproofs in your rucksack are recommended.
Anyone interested in joining can do so by scanning the QR code or by calling 07908 688 430.
