Local filmmaker releases new documentary exploring isolation, creativity and community

The film can be viewed online now.

A new documentary film created by an Oldham-based filmmaker has been released, telling the story of people living on the margins of society who come together through art, imagination and shared creativity.

Phantasmagoria, directed by local filmmaker Jon King, follows a group facing unemployment, mental health struggles and social isolation, who take part in a series of surreal community art projects. Through collaborative making, the group begin to rebuild confidence, connection and a sense of belonging.

Filmed in and around Greenfield, Saddleworth, the short documentary explores how creativity can help people find purpose at a time when many feel cut off from the world around them.

Director Jon King said: “I love making films about people doing unusual things while trying to make the world a better place. When I heard about the Phantasmagoria art group, I was intrigued by their unusual approach to engaging with the community and supporting people on their individual journeys.”

The film continues King’s work documenting communities, traditions and social change in the North, following previous short documentaries exploring folk customs, ageing, and social issues.

After a local screening in Greenfield, Phantasmagoria has now been released online, with the filmmakers hoping the film will reach audiences interested in art, mental health, and community stories.

Jon King said he hopes local audiences will be reminded of the importance of creativity. Amy, one of the film’s contributors said “People know that they need to exercise twice a week for 30 minutes, and they need to eat five a day. But I don't think people know the health benefits of doing something creative.”

The film is now available to watch online.
