Local charity presents ‘A Night at The Movies’ extravaganza

Rehearsals underway.

An Oldham-based disability charity is planning a spectacular performance of the year, with a gripping production combining the nostalgia of the silver screen and famous pop culture moments.

The event on April 24, will be staged by Pennine Mencap, a local charity that provides opportunities for adults with learning disabilities and complex needs in Oldham and the surrounding boroughs.

As part of the charity’s weekly timetable, they offer unique and popular activities with growing creativity and performance skills.

Amongst the most popular is ShowAbility, a dance group showcasing high-energy choreography designed to challenge expectations of what disability dance can achieve.

The groups are combining and gearing up towards their spring show - A Night at the Movies - with hopes to bring in their biggest audience yet.

From Hollywood classics to homegrown British productions, the show is inspired by movie moments that everyone will know and love.

This love of film motivated the groups to put on a unique multi-disciplinary show, combining songs, dance routines and vignettes inspired by scenes from their favourite cinema outings.

It’s not just ShowAbility taking the stage; the charity's long-standing Stage Right Performing Arts theatre group is an equally important part of the show, bringing a dramatic edge to the night.

Emily Trelore, one of Pennine Mencap’s two Activity Coordinators, has been preparing the performers for months.

She said: “Each rehearsal builds our excitement. From Mrs Doubtfire to Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, we’ve made sure there are parts of this performance that everyone will recognise and enjoy.”

Alongside her Activity Coordinator counterpart Tom Morris, Emily is looking forward to seeing the performers’ hard work pay dividends with another successful show.

The event, taking place at Hurst Community Centre, aims to bring in audience members from across Tameside and local communities.

It costs £7 to guarantee a seat and supports the continuing work of the charity. Fundraising efforts such as these are vital and provide dual benefits to not only the audience but the charity’s projects and efforts.
