Illuminate 2025 takes centre stage in OIdham

Thousands of people braved the elements for the spectacular Illuminate 2025 festival in Oldham.

The big event returned for its eighth year on Saturday with a trail of light installations and performances across the town centre.  

Families were left mesmerised as they witnessed hundreds of house shaped lanterns, Manni the giant dancing puppet, dancers from Indian Association and Fierce Dance, alongside music and dancing from community groups across the borough as they created a trail of light through the town. 

Twenty-three light installations and performances kept crowds entertained all evening and included giant projection performance ‘Harmony Hall’ created by Oldham Theatre Workshop and Illuminos on the façade of the Old Town Hall. 

Oldham Parish Church Garden was transformed by one hundred Oldham heart beats by artist Idontloveyouanymore,  plus ‘Our Town’ Lantern installation, And Breathe by artists PIFPAF and Reflect by Emma Gasson all illuminated the church interior. 

Gallery Oldham welcomed ‘The Lights’ exhibition from the Grundy in Blackpool which featured work by Dame Tracey Emin and Chila Kumari Singh Burman. 

Rock Neon from Things That Go On Things entertained visitors at The Egyptian Room, alongside live music from local singer songwriters. 

Somnius a giant light and sound installation from Illumaphonium also transformed the Queen Elizabeth Hall car park. 

Councillor Peter Dean, Cabinet Member for Thriving Communities and Culture said: “It was wonderful to see this incredible event back in Oldham town centre on Saturday night, bringing our community together to celebrate in such a special way. 

“The town centre was buzzing with excitement, and I look forward to more events like this in 2025.  This free event has become a firm favourite for residents, offering something for everyone, no matter their age.”
