Getting into the festive spirit in Oldham

People young and old came out in force last weekend as the Christmas festivities in Oldham got under way.

The borough’s official countdown to the big day began last Saturday afternoon from 1pm, as Santa Claus and his reindeer were welcomed to the town centre for their annual parade.

This year’s parade theme was ‘Christmas Around the World’ and there was a great turn-out, with many people getting in the festive spirit by dressing up.

It featured local community groups who brought global Christmas traditions to life.

There was also live music from Dobcross Silver Band and Oldham Scottish Pipe Band.

The parade signalled the opening of Santa’s Grotto at Spindles Town Square Shopping Centre, which runs until Christmas Eve, so children across the borough are being encouraged to ensure they give Santa their Christmas list over the coming weeks.

There are Christmas events coming up over the next four Saturdays at the shopping centre, taking place from 11.30am to 3.30pm.

There will be a fun green screen, an art area, festive characters, crafts, face painting and balloon modelling among other things.

Get ready to enjoy a spectacular evening of festive entertainment as the borough prepare to switch on Oldham's Christmas lights this weekend. Read more here
