Oldham police have issued guidance on the use of fireworks and anyone who does not adhere to the rules could be fined up to £5,000 or face imprisonment.
Officers said fireworks can be used on private property including your garden between 7am and 11pm with exemptions for certain dates, which are:
Bonfire night – Midnight
New Years – 1am
Diwali – 1am
Chinese New Year 1am
Fireworks can be used on private land with the owner’s permission and cannot be set off on streets, in public places, or in parks.
It is illegal to set off fireworks on private land within 50 feet (15.5m) of the centre of a highway.
Venues must have a named adult staff member designated as responsible for firework displays. Local Authorities may require prior notifications.
Adults aged 18 plus can only buy or possess Category 2 (Garden Fireworks) or Category 3 (Small display). Only licensed pyrotechnic professionals can buy or possess Category 4 fireworks.
Shops registered with the local authority can sell fireworks from Oct 15– Nov 10 and December 26–31, three days before Diwali and Chinese New Year.
Year-round sales require an all-year fireworks sales licence. Fire & Rescue & Trading Standards may inspect and enforce retailer compliance.
Repeated or late-night fireworks can be treated as statutory noise nuisance by local councils even if set off during the permitted hours.
Fireworks must not exceed 120 decibels at 15 metres.
Offenders can be fined up to £5,000 or face six months imprisonment. Action can be taken against Individuals, properties and venues.
