First Choice Homes Oldham reveal February Hidden Hero

A volunteer who goes 'above and beyond' in helping young First Choice Homes Oldham (FCHO) customers during school holidays is the housing association’s February Hidden Hero.

Hafsa Batan is a key member of the Yuvanis Foundation-run Holiday Activities and Food (HAF) programme in Chadderton that many FCHO customers use.

The mother-of-three was nominated for the award by the foundation’s chief executive Zakir Ahmad, who praised her ‘outstanding contribution’ as a trusted role model for young people.

Mrs Batan also supported a recent residential trip to Castleshaw for young girls as part of the Department for Culture, Media and Sport’s Adventures Away from Home initiative, delivered through Oldham Council.

“Hafsa consistently goes above and beyond in her role, particularly within youth and community activities, where her dedication, reliability, and compassion have made a clear and lasting difference,” said Mr Ahmad.

“Her commitment reflects the core values of community service, and her nomination is a well-deserved recognition of the meaningful impact she continues to have on young people in Chadderton and the wider Oldham community.”

Mrs Batan, from Oldham, has been a volunteer for two years. She was given her award by FCHO project and partnerships officer Ghazalla Iqbal. It also came with a £50 shopping voucher.

“My comfort place is in the background, doing the job that needs doing and being useful. So, to be recognised like this, for something that feels like such an integral part of who I am, is surreal. It’s such an honour and truly special," she said.

“I can’t take full credit. The people I work with, the young people, families and the local community that Yuvanis puts at the centre of everything, are the ones who deserve it most.”

Mrs Batan added: “I’m so grateful for the opportunity to volunteer. I hope to continue for as long as I can, because volunteering gives me more than I could ever hope to give.”

HAF is a government funded programme providing free food and activities for children receiving benefits-related free school meals during Easter, summer, and Christmas holidays.
