FCHO on target to double its apprentice numbers as it marks National Apprentice Week

First Choice Homes Oldham (FCHO) remains on target to double its apprentice numbers as the housing association celebrates National Apprenticeship Week.

FCHO made a 2025 pledge to go from 11 to 22 apprentices in two years as the business continues to invest in Oldham’s young people. The organisation now has 15 apprentices. 

A partnership with Oldham College is also now in place as FCHO offers apprenticeships in housing, trades, business administration and digital roles. 

“Currently, we have our apprentices in a range of disciplines across our teams as we continue to increase our numbers and look to reach our 22 targets by 2027,” said FCHO’s Director of People, Richard Sandiford. 

“As we celebrate National Apprenticeship Week, it is important to acknowledge how our apprenticeships are allowing people in Oldham to train in much-needed trades that allow them a good career and fill vacancies. 

“Many former apprentices also go on to secure permanent roles with us and that demonstrates our commitment to training young people alongside Oldham College and its excellent courses.” 

Alisha Carr from Chadderton is an FCHO apprentice joiner and was inspired to begin studying for a NVQ Level 2 in Carpentry and Joinery after working with her dad. 

“I love it here at FCHO because I’ve learned so much already,” the 19-year-old said.  

“I’m currently working on my first full kitchen fit. I’m now able to read drawings and take measurements, fit units and level up. 

“I am also able to ‘multi-skill’ meaning I am learning bits of other trades too,” she added. 

The FCHO and Oldham College partnership is also shaping a curriculum, so learning reflects real industry needs and offers employability skills, Mr Sandiford explained. 

Student placements and work experience will be provided by FCHO, giving learners hands-on insight into the housing and community sector. 

National Apprenticeship Week – running until February 15 – brings together businesses and apprentices across the country to highlight the positive impact apprenticeships make.
