Old Glossop Cricket Club celebrates 125 years with ‘Buy a Brick’ appeal

Old Glossop Cricket Club is marking its 125th anniversary by launching a special ‘Buy a Brick’ crowdfunding campaign to help transform a historic part of its ground.

Founded in 1901 the club is one of Glossop’s longest-standing community organisations, and has been at the heart of local sport for well over a century. To celebrate this milestone year, they are inviting supporters, past players, families and local businesses to purchase a personalised brick that will form part of a renovated score hut and patio area overlooking the ground.

Funds raised through the 125 Project – Buy a Brick campaign will be used to renovate the club’s ageing score hut and patio, which previously served as changing rooms until the 1990s. The project will include much-needed restoration work on the building itself, rebuilding the retaining walls at the front and creating a new seating area with improved views across one of the most picturesque parts of the ground.

As well as improving safety, the redevelopment will provide a welcoming, accessible viewing area for members, visitors and the wider community to enjoy matches and events for years to come.

Club Chairman George White said: “Reaching 125 years is a remarkable achievement and a real source of pride for everyone connected with Old Glossop Cricket Club. The Buy a Brick initiative gives people the chance to leave a lasting mark while helping us improve a much-loved but now tired part of our ground. This project is about respecting our history while investing in our future.”

Since its formation, the club has played an important role in local life, offering opportunities for juniors, seniors and volunteers alike, and helping generations of players discover and enjoy cricket.

To put the club’s founding year into context, when Old Glossop Cricket Club began life in 1901:

  • Queen Victoria died, ending the Victorian era
  • The first Nobel Prizes were awarded
  • The Commonwealth of Australia was officially formed
  • Guglielmo Marconi sent the first transatlantic radio signal

The crowdfunder is now live and the club hopes the campaign will reconnect former players and supporters while engaging new generations with the club’s anniversary celebrations.
