Nostalgia: Hollingworth lorry crash

Lunchtime shoppers were said to have had a lucky escape when this articulated truck thundered across Market Street, Hollingworth, and hurtled towards a shop window.

It was on a Friday in July 1970, and rather miraculously no one was hurt and, apart from the lorry which was carrying steel rods, there was not too much damage.

Eye witness Jim Walker said: “It was a chance in a million that no one was standing on the pavement when the accident happened.

“Parents usually leave their prams outside the shops while they go inside...but the pavement was empty.”

Even 50 years ago, the A628 was one of the busiest trunk roads in the area.
