Glossopdale Foodbank reflects on year of achievement

Some of the busy Glossopdale Foodbank team.

Glossopdale Foodbank has paid tribute to the generous support it has received from donors and volunteers over the past year.

Foodbank Manager Liz Kearslake said the charity could not operate without the dedication of its team: “Glossopdale Foodbank has had wonderful support from all our donors and our 70 volunteers throughout last year” she said.

“Our food parcel volunteers contribute around 60 hours of free time every week and keep everything working well. They collect food donations from supermarkets and other drop-off points, make up the parcels to be given out and run the various distribution points across Glossopdale five days a week.”

During the past year the Foodbank helped more than 4,300 families and individuals, including 1,394 children. Volunteers distributed over 2,000 bags of food and hygiene products and prepared 125 Christmas hampers. The organisation also achieved a five-star hygiene rating for its storage facility.

Alongside the front-line team, a further group of volunteers act as Trustees, provide vital administrative support, organise fundraising events and offer a range of professional skills. Their efforts contributed to the Foodbank being named Community Group of the Year 2025.

However, despite these successes, the charity is still facing challenges. Liz explained that they urgently need new premises. “We are still looking for somewhere we can process the food parcels without having to pay a huge commercial-sector rent,” she said.

“We are realistic about property and understand how things have changed, but if anyone reading this article knows of a suitable place for us to prepare parcels and store food, I would be really grateful if they would get in touch.”

The Foodbank is also appealing for new Trustees. Recently appointed Chair Annie Hopley said changes on the committee mean additional members are needed. “Due to retirement and, sadly, the death of one of our long-serving Trustees, we are now looking to recruit three new Trustees who will help push forward our agenda and suggest new ideas for providing food to those in need,” she said.

“We would encourage applications from anyone who feels they can contribute fresh thinking as well as support for our present work. A Trustee can be from any walk of life and of any age over 18. The role will be fully explained and plenty of support will be given, and they will know they are making a valuable contribution to Glossopdale.”

The Foodbank expressed heartfelt thanks to everyone who helps keep the service running and urged local people to look out for its upcoming Trustee recruitment advert.

A programme of fundraising activities is also planned for the year ahead, and new volunteers are always welcome.
