Glossop Mountain Rescue battles storm to rescue stranded walker 

Glossop Mountain Rescue Team were recently called out to assist an experienced hill walker who had spent the night on Kinder Scout. 

The walker awoke to extremely challenging conditions and attempted to make a swift retreat. However, worsening weather and difficult ground conditions hampered his progress. 

The first team members on scene accessed Kinder Scout via Fairbrook Naze, encountering sleet, snow, poor visibility and high winds. Additional team members were deployed via the Ashop Valley to assist with walking the casualty off the hill. Kinder Mountain Rescue Team were also tasked with placing a stretcher onto Mill Hill as a precaution. 

The gentleman was located exactly where he had described. He was cold and wet but otherwise well. A confidence rope was used to assist him safely down steep ground into the Ashop Valley, from where he was escorted off the hill. 

A spokesperson for Glossop Mountain Rescue Team said, “It’s always great to see people out enjoying the hills, but it’s vital to be aware of your own capabilities and to check the weather forecast carefully. Even for experienced walkers, knowing what to do when conditions deteriorate is just as important - as this walker demonstrated.”
