End in sight for sinkhole

Wren Nest Mill, Glossop

A multi-agency team has convened at the site of the long-standing sinkhole at Wren Nest Mill to coordinate essential repair work, with efforts now expected to begin imminently.

On the morning of Friday, July 25, representatives from Premier Estates - the building’s management company - met on site with key stakeholders, including structural engineers, temporary works specialists, contractors, and loss adjusters. The goal of the meeting was to finalise plans and agree on responsibilities for the complex repair operation.

In a letter to leaseholders later that day, Premier Estates described the visit as productive, stating: “All parties now have a clear understanding of the scope of works, their respective responsibilities and the level of coordination required moving forward.”

The Glossop Chronicle spoke to a representative of Premier Estates at the site, who confirmed that further details, including timelines and logistical arrangements, will be shared with the public once final plans are approved.

Several residents have expressed concern about potential disruptions. One told the Chronicle: “The sinkhole is near the main entrance to the building and next to the front car park, so I’m not sure if we’ll still be able to use that door or where I’ll be able to park.”

The sinkhole, which has been present for several years, has expanded significantly over time. In November 2024, the access road to the retail park where Wren Nest Mill is located was closed for several days as a precaution, disrupting deliveries to major retailers such as Next and Argos. The growing size of the sinkhole has understandably raised concerns about the structural safety of the historic mill, which dates back to 1848, as a large crack has appeared at the corner.

In addition to the sinkhole repairs, Premier Estates also shared that a broader maintenance project on the building is set to begin soon - welcome news for many residents.
