A local charity shop in Ashton is appealing for volunteers to help keep its doors open and continue supporting essential services across the community.
The YMCA charity shop in Ashton-under-Lyne is currently seeking new volunteers to join its team, offering a range of opportunities for people looking to give back while gaining valuable experience.
Mel Bamber, Retail Field Manager, highlighted just how important volunteers are to the organisation’s day-to-day operations.
“Volunteers are at the heart of every YMCA shop that we have. They play a vital role in supporting our mission to create safe, inclusive and connected communities.”
Across the UK, YMCA shops rely heavily on volunteer support to run smoothly. The time given by volunteers helps fund and deliver crucial services, including housing support, youth programmes and wellbeing initiatives.
At the Ashton shop, volunteers can get involved in a variety of tasks that keep the store running efficiently. These include serving customers, operating the till, sorting and processing donated goods, and creating eye-catching window and in-store displays. Volunteers also help maintain a clean, welcoming environment for shoppers.
But the benefits go both ways. According to Mel, volunteering offers more than just the chance to help others.
“It gives people the opportunity to build confidence, develop retail and customer service skills, and become part of a supportive community. They also act as friendly ambassadors for the YMCA.”
The charity is keen to hear from anyone over the age of 21 who is interested in supporting their local community. Getting involved is straightforward - prospective volunteers can simply visit their local YMCA shop and speak to a member of staff about available roles.
Alternatively, applications can be made online via the YMCA website, allowing people to explore opportunities across different locations from the comfort of their own home.
