A long-established boxing club at the heart of Hyde is facing an uncertain future, prompting a growing campaign from local residents, members and supporters who say the facility is a vital lifeline for young people and families.

Hyde and District Amateur Boxing Club, based on Ward Street in Hyde, has served the community for many years and is now the focus of a Change.org petition calling for it to remain open. Supporters say the club is far more than a training gym, describing it as a safe haven that has helped shape and support generations of local people.

Campaigners highlight the club’s long-standing work with young people, particularly those at risk of falling into crime. They say the structure, discipline and sense of belonging provided through boxing has helped many young men with troubled pasts find a positive direction in life. The club also prides itself on being inclusive, welcoming children and adults of all races and ages.

In addition, Hyde and District ABC offers specialist training for people with disabilities and those on the autism spectrum, helping participants build confidence, self-belief and social skills in a supportive environment. Supporters say this community-focused approach has made the club feel like a family for many who attend.

The club also holds a special place in boxing history, having been where the late Ricky Hatton began his illustrious career. Campaigners say that connection is a source of pride for Hyde and underlines the importance of protecting the club for future generations.

The building the club operate in is on council land that was declared surplus to requirements, though the council says there are no immediate redevelopment plans.

The council says that they are concerned about the condition of the building and is proposing to inspect the site to get an up-to-date record of the condition.

Paul, who started the petition, said uncertainty around the club’s future has caused growing concern among members and families. He explained that people had recently visited the Ward Street premises to take measurements but said the council has since provided little clarity.

“We’ve been told there is a new premises for the club, but we haven’t been told where it is,” he said. “There’s been no timescale given either, and that uncertainty is really difficult for the kids and coaches.”

Paul stressed that the club does not want to be in conflict with Tameside Council and is simply asking for a suitable place to continue training.

“This club is a lifeline for a lot of kids,” he said. “It’s like a family here. We’re not looking for an argument; we just want somewhere appropriate and safe to train. We’re not giving up without a fight.”

Supporters of the petition acknowledge that maintaining community facilities can be challenging, particularly in the current financial climate. However, they argue that closing Hyde and District Amateur Boxing Club would remove an essential support system and leave a gap that would be difficult to replace.

The petition calls on Tameside Council, community leaders and other stakeholders to work together to explore funding options and partnership opportunities that could keep the club operating.

TMBC says that they have not taken any formal action to seek possession of the property and that they invite and welcome proposals from the boxing club.

Campaigners say collaboration, rather than closure, would allow the club’s proven social and community benefits to continue.

The petition can be found at https://c.org/ccx5BvWvSt, with supporters hoping a solution can be reached that balances practical considerations with the club’s long-standing value to Hyde.

A Tameside Council spokesperson said: “We are working with the boxing club to support them to find suitable alternative accommodation.”
