A Victorian-era library in Hyde has been sold off by the council so it can be transformed into a giant apartment complex.
Hyde Library has fallen to rack and ruin since it closed down one decade ago.
Last year a vision for its future was secured when developers Hyde Court Ltd gained approval to convert it into 102 new apartments. There has been no movement since Tameside council’s planning panel granted planning permission in July last year, until now.
The local authority has confirmed the sale of the land to Hyde Court Ltd.
This means the site off Union Street, which opened in 1899, will be turned into apartments spread over three blocks.
The iconic building will become one apartment block – containing 53 flats. The other two blocks will be erected on each side of the library building with 34 and 15 apartments respectively.
The multi-million pound scheme would provide a mix of one, two and three bedroom homes with 72 car parking spaces in total.
The building last served as a library for the town in 2015, when services were moved to Hyde Town Hall. Since then the interior of the building has fallen into disrepair due to vandalism.
It was also ravaged by a fire in 2022 after vandals broke into the building illegally.
Coun Hugh Roderick, Tameside council’s executive member for finance and resources said: “The sale and redevelopment of the former library marks a significant moment for Hyde. This building is an important part of our heritage, and Hyde Court Ltd’s investment will ensure it is brought back into use with the care it deserves.
“Restoring this much‑loved landmark while delivering high‑quality new homes is exactly the kind of regeneration that strengthens our town centre.”
The scheme is anticipated to act as a catalyst for further investment in Hyde, aligning with the town’s long‑term regeneration strategy.
